Rath Yatra

The smiling deities of Lord Jagannatha, His elder brother Balarama and His sister Subhadra come out of the temple and ride on their wooden chariots to bless the devotees. Wooden chariot is pulled by thousands of devotees in a grand procession. All the way through there is melodious singing, chanting and dancing to rhythmical drums and cymbals. The procession ends with delicious vegetarian prasadam feast.

Pulling of chariots by the devotees symbolizes the attempt of the residents of Vrindavan to bring Krishna (Lord Jagannath), and His elder brother Balarama and His sister Subhadra back to Vrindavan from Kurushetra.

The Chariot festival originated in the holy city of Puri, India and has been celebrated for thousands of years. The first chariot festival outside India was initiated by A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada (founder of ISKCON) on July 9, 1967 in San Francisco. The lord of the universe, Lord Jagannatha now parade in major cities all over the world such as Newyork, Los Angeles, Seattle, London, Paris, Durban, Rome, etc. People around the globe are becoming attracted to the joyful and colorful festival.
